$500,000 foundation gift to support renewed doctoral program in art history

Two grants totaling $500,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will support the launch of a redesigned Joint Doctoral Program in Art History. Administered by the Department of Art History and Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art, the revitalized program will offer students an immersive, object-oriented experience based on the study of individual works of art. Study shows empathy represses analytic thought, and vice versa

Why do intelligent people fall for the sob stories of scam artists? A new study by College of Arts and Sciences faculty and undergraduate students reveals that when the brain fires up the neurons that generate empathy, it suppresses the neurons used for analytic activity—and vice versa. Anthony Jack, assistant professor in the Department of Cognitive Science, was the lead author of the study; his collaborators included Angela H. Ciccia, assistant professor of psychological sciences. Scholars take home American Musicological Society honors

Papers by Department of Music scholars have earned prestigious honors from the American Musicological Society. Assistant professor Francesca Brittan received the Alfred Einstein Award for the best article by a scholar in his or her early career. And doctoral student Barbara Swanson received the Paul A. Pisk Prize for her paper presented at the organization’s annual meeting. Read more.

Jim Sheeler, Shirley Wormser Professor of Journalism and Media Writing, authored a Washington Post Magazine cover story about Army Lt. Col. Perfectionism is treatable when it becomes a problem

Amy Przeworski, assistant professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, was interviewed for a Wall Street Journal story about perfectionists and how she treats those whose tendencies are impacting their ability to function.
