Medical Museums book coverNotable recognition of our endeavors came this past May with the publication of Medical Museums: Past, Present, Future by the Royal College of Surgeons. This landmark publication takes stock of today’s medical museums (including a chapter on our own), and ponders where they are headed. This book is not available from Amazon.com, but we do have copies here and are offering it as a special bonus to new and renewing Friends members this year. Your support goes towards the cost of hosting our events and programs, and is sincerely appreciated.
As 2013 draws to a close at the Dittrick, we pause to reflect upon a very eventful year. We have greatly expanded our events this year. Our two endowed lecture series, the Skuy Lecture and the Zverina Lecture, brought in two diverse and talented speakers. For the Skuy, we hosted clinical researcher Robert Reid to speak on contraception, and for the Zverina—which was held on Halloween—we invited Lindsey Fitzharris, the “Chirurgeon’s Apprentice” and host of Medicine’s Dark Secrets, to tell the human stories behind medical museum specimens. We also hosted Natasha McEnroe for the Handerson Lecture (not yet endowed); director of the Nightingale Museum in London, she reflected upon the cult of celebrity in museums.
We hope you will join us this coming year, as we have an exciting series of exhibits and lectures in store. The Spring issue of the Cleveland Medical Library Association Newsletter, which will be included with Friends memberships, will provide more details on the Dittrick series and the upcoming 2014 Obscura Day. We look forward to seeing you then!
A special thank you to our loyal Friends, we truly appreciate your support!
