Specialty: English Program Faculty, Writing Program Faculty

I received my PhD in English with concentrations in applied linguistics and TESL from Oklahoma State University in 2011. I also hold an MA in applied linguistics and TESL from Oklahoma State University (2006) as well as an MA in Central European History from Central European University, Budapest, Hungary (2001).

I have been teaching in the SAGES ESL Writing Program since Fall 2011. Currently, I am teaching courses in the SAGES Program including academic English (FSAE 100), First Seminar (FSCC 100) as well as English grammar for writers (ENGL 146).

Insofar as my research interests are concerned, they are in the areas of Construction Grammar and Cognitive Linguistics (including more general areas, such as pragmatics and corpus linguistics) and also in using simulations in teaching English as a second language. My dissertation combined pragmatics and Construction Grammar frameworks in analyzing apologies using corpora and discourse analysis methodologies. I have done research on several corpora, including The Santa Barbara Corpus of Spoken American English (SBCSAE), The Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English (MICASE), The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), as well as Romanian and Hungarian corpora. My chapter entitled “On discourse-motivated ‘sorries’: Fictive apologies in English, Hungarian, and Romanian” was published by John Benjamins in the volume The Conversation Frame: Forms and Functions of Fictive Interaction, edited by E. Pascual and S. Sandler. Bridging my interests in language simulations and pragmatics, my article “Role-plays as a data collection method for research on apology speech acts” was published in Simulation & Gaming. Most recently, I’ve been analyzing multimodal fictive apologies in Distributed Little Red Hen Lab’s largest multimodal dataset, the UCLA Library Broadcast NewsScape. http://www.gusztavdemeter.net
