{"id":1005,"date":"2017-03-01T17:18:37","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T17:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/documentation\/?page_id=1005"},"modified":"2017-03-03T17:54:21","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T17:54:21","slug":"accessibility","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/documentation\/accessibility\/","title":{"rendered":"Accessibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Web Accessibility is the practice of creating web content that is usable for those with disabilities, including low or severe vision impairment, colorblindness, deafness or hearing loss, and impaired mobility.<\/p>\n<p>These users utilize tools like screen reader software,\u00a0enlarged screen resolution, and special computer mice or keyboards to make a website easier to use. Screen reader software like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomscientific.com\/Products\/Blindness\/JAWS\">JAWS<\/a>\u00a0reads out all the content on the screen in order, and the user can use the keyboard to navigate based on the voice description provided by the software.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the College of Arts and Sciences Web System we have already included many of the elements needed to make our system accessible. However, in order to maximize our accessibility\u00a0there are a few things editors\u00a0can also do to help.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Images<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adding extra contextual content to our image code is the most common way we can help with accessibility. When you insert an image into a post or page, Be sure to fill out the alt text, which should directly describe the content of the image. In general, your PDF files should follow a logical structure of font sizes and weights.<\/p>\n<p>When you create PDFs from Microsoft Word Documents you need to take a few extra steps to make sure they&#8217;re accessible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">On a Mac using Office 2016<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"row column-group-3\"><div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6 col-lg-6\"><\/p>\n<p>Go to File &gt; Save As.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6 col-lg-6\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019\" src=\"https:\/\/artscimedia.case.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/105\/2017\/03\/01170823\/Screen-Shot-2017-03-01-at-12.07.24-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"row column-group-4\"><div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6 col-lg-6\"><\/p>\n<p>Choose PDF as the file format.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to select the option that says &#8220;Best for electronic distribution and accessibility (uses Microsoft online service). <strong>Note: this is only suitable for publicly available information, not for internal or private data.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It will ask you to confirm using the online service to convert your file if you have never used it before.
