The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque will be showing the film TÓTEM, this evening February, 9 at 7:00 p.m. TÓTEM is Mexico’s Oscar entry at this year’s Academy Awards, executive produced by Salma Hayek and writer/director Lila Avilés.
Manohla Dargis of the New York Times called TÓTEM “one of the finest movies you’ll see all year.” The film had its debut at the Berlin Film Festival last year where it won the Ecumenical Jury Prize and this year was named the best Latino film of 2023 by the Los Angeles Times, where critic Carlos Aguilar called it a “humanist triumph.” It has also appeared on top ten films of the year lists by New York Magazine, RogerEbert.com, The Hollywood Reporter, and the Associated Press. As noted, the film is Mexico’s Oscar entry and has been shortlisted for Best International Feature by the Academy.
