{"id":51,"date":"2014-10-15T14:39:04","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T14:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/ethnicstudies\/?page_id=51"},"modified":"2014-10-24T21:43:08","modified_gmt":"2014-10-25T01:43:08","slug":"latin-americanlatino-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/ethnicstudies\/concentrations\/latin-americanlatino-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Latin American\/Latino Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students interested in the Latin American \/ Latino Studies concentration within the Ethnic Studies minor may take a variety of courses housed in numerous departments within the College of Arts and Sciences.\u00a0 In addition to taking ETHS 252B: \u00a0Introduction to Latino\/a Studies and ETHS 253B: \u00a0Introduction to Latin American History, students concentrating in Latin American \/ Latino Studies may take courses in Political Science, History, English, Cognitive Science, Religious Studies, Women&#8217;s and Gender Studies and Sociology, to name just a few disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>The ETHS Program partners with the Latino\/a student organization, La Alianza, and ETHS students have the opportunity to volunteer as mentors at institutions such as ESPERANZA and the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center.\u00a0 ETHS students also serve as mentors at schools on the West Side with large Latino\/a populations, such as Lincoln West High School (Cleveland).<\/p>\n<p>Some of the distinguished lecturers and events ETHS has hosted include:<\/p>\n<p>2014&#8212; Richard Blanco, US Inaugural Poet, visited CWRU as part of the activities to celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month. Poetry reading and talk. October 15.<\/p>\n<p>2014&#8212; Art show exhibition: Latino\u2019s artists at CWRU. Kelvin Smith Library. September 12\u2013October 24.<\/p>\n<p>2014&#8212; \u00a0\u201cJose Kozer at CWRU: poetry in exile\u201d. April 14\u201317.<\/p>\n<p>2014&#8212; \u201cA High Art: Soviet and Post\u2013Soviet School of Literary Translation dealing with the Latin American Fiction.\u201d A talk by Daria Sinitcyna, translator, critic and professor from the State University of Saint Petersburg, Russia. April 2\u20133\u2028.<\/p>\n<p>2014\u2014Merlinda Bobis, Filipina author and performance artist, Chair of Creative Writing at the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>2013&#8212; \u201cCuba at Case.\u201d Official Transfer of 17 books donated by Vig\u00eda Publishing House to Kelvin Smith Library, after completion of the first study abroad in Cuba. Talk by Alfredo Zald\u00edvar, founder director of Vig\u00eda.
