But the spread of the Delta variant and somewhat expected news that protection through vaccination appears to decline over time still leave reason for caution. I do not see how the kind of distancing and care that public health would recommend can be combined with a large group of people having lunch in a fairly crowded room. Perhaps in a few weeks there will be less reason for concern, and we will revisit whether we can meet in person later in September. Please e-mail me if you have suggestions about other approaches \u2013 for instance, does it make sense to do \u201cFriday Lunch\u201d without, well, lunch? My e-mail is<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:joseph.white@case.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">joseph.white@case.edu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>This Week\u2019s Program<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">However we meet,\u00a0<strong>there is lots to talk about this semester,<\/strong>\u00a0and our next topic is rather urgent.\u00a0<strong>On September 14 Cleveland will hold a nonpartisan primary to choose two candidates for Mayor in the general election on November 2.<\/strong>\u00a0The primary seems wide open, and whether the leader wins the general election will depend a lot on who finishes second so is running against the leader.\u00a0<strong>The victor will succeed Cleveland\u2019s longest-serving mayor, Frank Jackson, who was first elected in 2005.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be voters who cannot remember any other mayor, and the choice will influence the future of the city and region for years to come. Mayor Jackson is leaving a city that has been losing population, has close to the highest poverty rate of any large city in the country, and faces myriad other challenges \u2013<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevescene.com\/scene-and-heard\/archives\/2021\/08\/25\/seven-enter-two-leave-a-primer-on-the-2021-cleveland-mayoral-primary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">so much so that some might wonder why anyone would want the job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">. Nevertheless, there are seven candidates and six arguably have a shot to make the final two.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So who are these candidates, what do they stand for, who seems likely to support them, and what seems most likely to happen?<\/strong>\u00a0They range from someone who has held the job before, with a very long career in politics, Dennis Kucinich, to Justin Bibb, a relatively new face,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/opinion\/2021\/08\/we-endorse-justin-bibb-for-mayor-of-cleveland-editorial-board.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">endorsed by the Plain Dealer<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">in the hope he might be another<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkyc.com\/article\/news\/politics\/elections\/cleveland-mayoral-election\/former-cleveland-mayor-michael-white-to-endorse-justin-bibb-for-mayor-of-cleveland\/95-fb376b9b-188d-40fe-8fc6-f528e2ee3d19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">Michael White<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">but suddenly facing concern about<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/cityhall\/2021\/08\/cleveland-mayoral-candidate-justin-bibb-underreported-income-sources-for-3-years-in-state-ethics-disclosure-filings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">financial disclosure forms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">. Outgoing City Council President Kevin Kelley is<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideastream.org\/news\/frank-jackson-endorses-kevin-kelley-to-succeed-him-as-cleveland-mayor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">endorsed by Mayor Jackson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">, and State Senator Sandra Williams by Cuyahoga County Executive<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevescene.com\/scene-and-heard\/archives\/2021\/05\/03\/state-senator-sandra-williams-announces-candidacy-for-cleveland-mayor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">Armand Budish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">. Former and longtime City Councilman Zack Reed finished second in 2017, and Ward 7 Councilman Basheer Jones is having success in fundraising to support his reputation as a dynamic speaker.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a challenging set of choices, and Ideastream has been covering the race in depth, including as co-sponsor, with The City Club of Cleveland, of debates on<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideastream.org\/news\/cleveland-mayoral-candidates-clash-over-transparency-in-idea-center-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">August 10<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">and<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideastream.org\/news\/second-cleveland-mayoral-debate-highlights-candidate-differences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">August 17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">.
