Instead I\u2019d like to thank Steve Crowley and Roman Sheremata for agreeing to talk at short notice, about the topic that must be on nearly everyone\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n<p>We are continuing the \u201cFriday Lunch\u201d as a Zoom discussion, and that may be a good thing because there ought to be a lot of interest in getting a bit behind the headlines about the invasion.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Crowley spoke to our group in 2018 about the extent and limits of Vladimir Putin\u2019s power, and while he knows a lot about Ukraine can especially address the Russian side of the situation. Professor Sheremata was in Kyiv as the invasion approached, working to create a new<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thedaily.case.edu\/weatherhead-schools-roman-sheremeta-works-to-launch-university-in-ukraine\/?utm_source=sfmc&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=umc_president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">American University in Kyiv<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">, of which he was (and perhaps, lord willing, is) to be founding rector. He returned on Wednesday of last week,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-putin-russia-ukraine-invasion-war-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">just before the invasion began<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">, and we could hardly imagine a better source about the situation within the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Signing In<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">This semester&#8217;s discussions will begin at 12:30 p.m., the usual time. The meeting will be set up as from Noon to 2:00 p.m., so people are not all signing in at the same time and to allow for the discussion to run a bit long.\u00a0<strong>Each week we will send out this newsletter with information about the topic. His teaching centers on Russia and Eastern Europe, peace and conflict studies, revolutions, and globalization.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Crowley&#8217;s recent book,\u00a0<em>Putin&#8217;s Labor Dilemma: Russian Politics between Stability and Stagnation<\/em>,(Cornell University Press) examines the specter of looming labor and social unrest as Russia\u2019s leaders contemplate how to rejuvenate the country\u2019s struggling economy. It explores Putin\u2019s populist rhetoric and symbolism, the challenges posed by Russia\u2019s \u201cmonotowns\u201d and other hard-hit industrial centers, and the potential for protest stemming from either declining living standards or painful structural reforms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roman Sheremeta<\/strong>\u00a0is an associate professor of economics at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University and a research affiliate at the Economic Science Institute at Chapman University. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Purdue University and is a recipient of many research and teaching awards, including the 2018 Smith Ascending Scholar Prize, as well as multiple grants, including the National Science Foundation and the Max Planck Institute grants. Sheremeta was listed as a Top Economic Thinker of Ukrainian descent by\u00a0<em>Forbes<\/em>\u00a0in 2015, a top-rated young economist in the world according to the IDEAS ranking in 2018, and recognized as the Best 40 Under 40 Professors by\u00a0<em>Poets and Quants<\/em>\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>His research has been published in more than 60 leading scholarly journals in economics, business, psychology, and political science, and featured in a variety of popular media outlets, including the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Forbes<\/em>,\u00a0<em>NBC News<\/em>,\u00a0<em>NPR<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Science Daily<\/em>. The focus of his research is in experimental economics and game theory, with applications to behavioral economics, conflict resolution, industrial organization, labor economics, and public economics.
