To supporters, blockchain technology represents the future of finance. To detractors, it is nothing more than a volatile and environmentally destructive Ponzi scheme. In this talk, Peter Zimmerman will discuss what we have learned about these markets over the past fourteen years, and what the future may hold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Signing In<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0a304e;\">The \u201cFriday Lunch\u201d has been convening each Friday that classes are in session during Fall and \u201cSpring\u201d semesters since 1989. Regrettably, after more than three decades meeting in person and eating lunch (or at least coffee and cookies) together, we had to take our gatherings online after the pandemic hit in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I hope that this, the final meeting of \u201cSpring\u201d 2022 semester, will be the last exclusively online for a while.<\/strong>\u00a0My wishful plan is to go \u201cdual delivery\u201d when\u00a0<strong>we return on September 2<\/strong>\u00a0for the beginning of Fall, 2022 semester. His research interests are in financial market infrastructure and banking. Recently, he has focused on fintech and issues around cryptocurrencies as payments instruments.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining the Bank in 2020, Dr. Zimmerman was a senior economist at the Bank of England. He worked on research and policy issues around the Basel 3 banking reforms, payments systems, shadow banking, and macroprudential policy.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Zimmerman received his Ph.D. in financial economics from Sa\u00efd Business School at the University of Oxford.
