I don\u2019t think there is much need to explain the topic and timing of this week\u2019s \u201cFriday Lunch\u201d discussion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The midterm election is on Tuesday, November 8. The stakes are extremely high. The results are quite uncertain, though it doesn\u2019t look real promising for the Democrats.<\/p>\n

The \u201cFriday Lunch\u201d also has a tradition of holding a pre-election forecast discussion. This year I\u2019ve asked Tom Sutton to join us because he not only is an expert on elections but leads Baldwin-Wallace\u2019s public opinion polling. They completed a state poll on the weekend of October 22-23. Thus he can report on the underlying dynamics of presidential approval, Governor DeWine\u2019s positive familiarity, and other factors that are shaping the seeming dead heat in the race for Ohio\u2019s U.S. Senate seat, the not-very-tight contest for Governor, and what looks like a slight advantage for Republicans in the elections for Ohio Supreme Court. He can also tell us to what extent we should believe polls.<\/p>\n

He will add his observations on the election overall, and then I and maybe a colleague or two will comment further about the national picture. I can\u2019t promise that anyone else will be foolish enough to make a projection, but I will offer a heavily-hedged one! That will include what to watch for as the results begin to come in on election night \u2013 aside from the obvious, which is to what extent the votes were cast in an orderly and peaceful manner<\/p>\n

So I hope we\u2019ll have a good discussion and then I\u2019ll settle back to shaking with fear for a few days\u2026
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In-Person and Virtual Attendance<\/h3>\n

In order to make it easy for people to protect themselves and still participate, the meetings are accessible on Zoom. Participants can register for each meeting in the same way they did for the past two years. The link is posted below.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This \u201cdual delivery\u201d remains a work in progress. Please be patient with any glitches. The ways we can set up video and audio to work for both people in the room and on Zoom are not perfect.<\/p>\n

The discussion begins at 12:30 p.m., but the room should be open no later than Noon. We try to have beverages and refreshments set up soon after that. Participants should be able to sign on to Zoom also by Noon. But please remember not much will be happening online until the talk begins at 12:30 pm. Please also remember to show identification when entering Kelvin Smith Library.<\/p>\n

Zoom participants should speak up when asked for questions or comments, or submit thoughts through Zoom\u2019s chat function. Please keep yourself muted until you are choosing to speak.<\/p>\n

Each week we will send out this newsletter with information about the topic. It will also include a link to register (for free) for the discussion.<\/strong>\u00a0When you register, you will automatically receive from the Zoom system the link to join the meeting. About Our Guest<\/span><\/h3>\n

Dr. Thomas Sutton<\/strong>\u00a0directs the Community Research Institute (CRI), which engages students in applied research with local and regional nonprofit and government agencies. He coordinates the public & nonprofit management major\/minor and the Africana studies minor at Baldwin Wallace University. He also develops and coordinates innovation and entrepreneurship programs for the Center for Innovation and Growth (CIG).<\/p>\n

Sutton serves as independent political analyst for WEWS Channel 5, providing periodic analysis of local and national political developments and events.<\/p>\n

Sutton also has 13 years of prior experience in nonprofit management, including work in civic education, services for homeless persons, and programming for juvenile offenders and at-risk youth.<\/span><\/p>\n
