And according to its advocates, it\u2019s possible that only the election might be more important. Or not. As I said, there is a lot of hype.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth of an informal series of discussions. We began in September of 2023 with Professor Kalle Lyytinen discussing \u201c<\/font><a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/fridaylunch\/2023\/09\/29\/why-not-to-panic-about-a-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font color=\"#0a304e\"><u>Why Not to Panic About AI<\/u><\/font><\/a><font color=\"#0a304e\">.\u201d  Then in March of this year <strong>Satya Sahoo<\/strong>, Director of the Biomedical and Health Informatics Program in the School of Medicine, gave<\/font> <a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/fridaylunch\/2024\/03\/22\/thinking-about-generative-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font color=\"#0a304e\"><u>an overview<\/u><\/font><\/a> <font color=\"#0a304e\">of some of the things generative AI can do, and how. This September Mark Turner, Institute Professor and Professor of Cognitive Science, spoke about \u201cArtificial Intelligence, Natural Intelligence, and Co-Intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For this week\u2019s talk, Professor Lyytinen will discuss what might seem the most obvious topic for a distinguished Weatherhead School of Management professor.  Namely, <strong>how are businesses actually using the stuff? To what effect?<\/strong> A <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> report estimated that organizations will<\/font> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/its-time-for-ai-to-start-making-money-for-businesses-can-it-b476c754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font color=\"#0a304e\"><u>spend nearly $39 billion<\/u><\/font><\/a> <font color=\"#0a304e\">on Generative AI in 2024. Planned investment requires such massive computing power that generating the electricity has been called \u201c<\/font><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/07\/12\/g-s1-9545\/ai-brings-soaring-emissions-for-google-and-microsoft-a-major-contributor-to-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font color=\"#0a304e\"><u>a major contributor to climate change<\/u><\/font><\/a><font color=\"#0a304e\">.\u201d But lists of possible profitable businesses don\u2019t look<\/font> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/stock-market\/market-sectors\/information-technology\/ai-stocks\/how-to-make-money-with-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font color=\"#0a304e\"><u>all that impressive<\/u><\/font><\/a><font color=\"#0a304e\">.<\/p>\n<p>My whole worldview tells me this is a very big bubble.  But <strong>what do I know?  I\u2019m a glass-half-empty kind of guy<\/strong>. Wolstein Professor of Management Design and Distinguished University Professor at Case Western Reserve University. Lyytinen\u2019s research focuses generally on the content, form and antecedents of digital innovations and how they shape organizations and industries. His work helps organizations know how to identify, absorb, manage, implement and be transformed by digital innovations. His research has focused on the content and logic of digital innovation, digital innovation regimes and infrastructures, organizing and processes of digital innovation, how digital technology shapes engineering and design practices,  and how organizing affects software development outcomes \u2013 especially in open source development. Lyytinen has also studied in the past the adoption of new technologies- especially mobile technologies, new collaboration forms enabled by technologies, and new ways to determine large scale system requirements. He has also written articles on research methods, theory and how to theorize of phenomena which is fast changing and dynamic.
