{"id":69,"date":"2005-04-08T18:46:19","date_gmt":"2005-04-08T18:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/fridaylunch\/?p=69"},"modified":"2024-06-05T18:47:26","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T18:47:26","slug":"the-politics-of-airports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/fridaylunch\/2005\/04\/08\/the-politics-of-airports\/","title":{"rendered":"The Politics of Airports"},"content":{"rendered":"<table style=\"font-weight: 400;\" width=\"456\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"456\">\n<h3><strong>&#8220;<\/strong><strong>The Politics of Airports<\/strong><strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>April 8, 2005<br \/>\nAdelbert Hall, Toepfer Room<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"525\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"124\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"785\">\n<h3><strong>Robert Clarke Brown<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>Member of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Capital Markets Advisor at the U.S. Department of Transportation<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear Colleagues:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airports are real stuff.\u00a0 A lot of the news and political science about politics focuses on symbolism and arguments about representation and all that.\u00a0 But whether the local airport is any good is something that matters to us directly, and its future is of great concern to the economic interests in any community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So airports have politics and that politics matters, even though the average American Politics course does not say much about it.\u00a0 Airports are also a big business, which means they raise, spend, borrow and invest a whole lot of money.\u00a0 Their business then becomes part of the politics \u2013 and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s Friday lunch discussion will be led by someone who has a lot of experience with both the politics and market side of airports.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Robert Clarke Brown<\/strong>\u00a0worked as a senior investment banker in the transportation finance group at Lehman Brothers, then managed the public finance department for Key Capital Markets, before returning to the public sector as a Capital Markets Advisor at the U.S. Department of Transportation. \u00a0He has also been Ohio\u2019s Assistant Director of Transportation and a Senior Counsel to the Committee on Government Operations of the U.S. House of Representatives, among other positions.\u00a0 The result is that he has a great deal of experience in transportation policy most generally.\u00a0 But he also is a member, appointed by President Clinton, of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which operates Washington National and Washington Dulles Airports. \u00a0He chairs the Board\u2019s Strategic Development Committee, and previously chaired the Board\u2019s Finance Committee as it expanded Dulles Airport and redesigned that expansion program after September 11.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we\u2019ve asked Bob to come and talk about airports, and the discussion could cover a lot of ground, depending on what people want to raise. \u00a0We will gather on\u00a0<strong>Friday, April 8<\/strong>, from\u00a0<strong>12:30 p.m.to 1:30 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Toepfer<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Room<\/strong>\u00a0of Adelbert<strong>\u00a0Hall<\/strong>.\u00a0 Beverages and cookies will be provided.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best regards,<br \/>\nJoe White<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>About Our Guest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Clarke Brown,\u00a0is a consultant and capital markets advisor to the U.S. Department of Transportation. He was previously the Managing Director of Public Finance at Key Capital Markets, the investment banking subsidiary of KeyCorp, a bank holding company based in Cleveland, Ohio, and a senior investment banker at Lehman Brothers. He has served as Ohio\u2019s Assistant Director of Transportation and as counsel to two Congressional investigating committees.
