{"id":483,"date":"2014-04-16T16:12:50","date_gmt":"2014-04-16T16:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/funding\/?page_id=483"},"modified":"2016-06-28T13:40:37","modified_gmt":"2016-06-28T13:40:37","slug":"understanding-nih-grant-numbers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/funding\/understanding-nih-grant-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding NIH Grant Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b>The <strong>grant number<\/strong> is composed of the following parts: \u00a0\u00a0Example: 5 R01 HL123451-01A1<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application Type Code (5)<\/li>\n<li>Activity Code (RO1)<\/li>\n<li>Institute Code (HL)<\/li>\n<li>Serial Number (123451)<\/li>\n<li>Support Year (01)<\/li>\n<li>Suffix Code (A2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><b>Application type<\/b> is the first digit on an application identification number:<\/p>\n<p>Type 1 \u2014 New \u2014 provides PHS support for a new research project grant.<\/p>\n<p>Type 2 \u2014 Renewal \u2014 extends a project period that would otherwise expire for one or more grant budget periods; applications are peer reviewed and compete for funding.<\/p>\n<p>Type 3 \u2014 Supplement, a.k.a. administrative supplement \u2014 adds funds to a grant without peer review.<\/p>\n<p>Type 4 \u2014 Extension \u2014 provides time and funds beyond recommended levels.<\/p>\n<p>Applies only to MERIT and Small Business Innovation Research Fast Track applications.<\/p>\n<p>Type 5 \u2014 Noncompeting continuation \u2014 continues support in the out years of a grant; does not compete for funds.<\/p>\n<p>Type 6 \u2014 Change of grantee \u2014 transfers a grant when one organization buys out another, also called successor of interest.<\/p>\n<p>Type 7 \u2014 Change of grantee \u2014 transfers a grant from one institution to another.<\/p>\n<p>Type 8 \u2014 Change of NIH institute \u2014 transfers a grant from one institute to another.<\/p>\n<p>Type 9 \u2014 Change of institute \u2014 continues support for grant transferred from one institute to another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Activity code<\/b> is the 3-digit identifier of an award type, e.g., R01 is a research project grant. Activity codes are grouped together to form funding mechanisms. The major mechanism series are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">F \u2014 fellowships<br \/>\nK \u2014 career development awards<br \/>\nN \u2014 research contracts<br \/>\nP \u2014 program project and research center grants<br \/>\nR \u2014 research project grants<br \/>\nS \u2014 research-related programs (equipment etc.)<br \/>\nT \u2014 training grants<br \/>\nU \u2014 cooperative agreements<br \/>\nY \u2014 interagency agreements<\/p>\n<p>More information on the major funding mechanisms can be found on the Web: <a href=\"http:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/funding\/funding_program.htm\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">http:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/funding\/funding_program.htm<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Institute code<\/strong> letter code indicates the primary funding institute (more &amp; more awards will be shared, but only the primary IC is incorporated in the grant application number). The serial number is assigned by the <a href=\"http:\/\/cms.csr.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Scientific Review<\/a> (CSR).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Serial Number<\/strong> is assigned by the CSR. This number provides a unique identification to the project and is assigned sequentially for newly submitted applications. The Serial Number remains the same for as long as a project is active, even when the PI submits a competing continuation for a new period of support.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Support Year\u00a0<\/strong>indicates the current year of support (for example, 01 is a new grant).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suffix Code\u00a0<\/strong>is used for supplements, amendments, or fellowship institutional allowances. The Suffix &#8220;A1&#8221; indicates that the application was submitted once previously but did not receive a sufficiently strong priority score to merit funding. This application is an amended version of the original one also called a &#8220;resubmission.&#8221; Other suffix terms are also used.
