Ward, left, and university trustee Sara Moll discuss launching the new Moll Institute to help address growing mental health needs.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Hope Vaccaro <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has seen the devastating ways the pandemic has eroded the mental health of children and adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a doctoral candidate in psychology at Case Western Reserve, she has helped treat campus and community clients after COVID-19 transformed nearly every aspect of daily life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was so clearly far-reaching within nearly every community,\u201d said Vaccaro (GRS \u201921, psychology), who is specializing in child clinical psychology. \u201cThese impacts are going to continue to show themselves for many years, in many different ways.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After decades as a clinical psychologist and community volunteer, triple-alumna <\/span><b>Sara Moll<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD (FSM \u201966; GRS \u201990, \u201992, psychology), deeply understood those long-term impacts\u2014 and felt compelled to respond. Over the summer, the university announced a $60 million collaboration with Moll and her husband, Curt: The Sara and Curt Moll Institute for Mental Health and Well-Being, which will expand the College of Arts and Sciences\u2019 programs to prepare psychologists, produce transformative research and engage collaborators across the university and the broader local community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4068\" style=\"width: 327px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4068\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4068 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/artscimedia.case.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2024\/01\/02153412\/P12_Sara-and-Curt-Moll-milner-perhaps-able-to-crop-to-just-the-two-of-them-copy_No_credit.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Curt and Sara Moll\" width=\"317\" height=\"303\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Curt and Sara Moll pledged $23.5 million for the institute on campus. For nearly 30 years, Curt Moll led MTD Products, an outdoor power-equipment manufacturer based in<br \/>Northeast Ohio and co-founded by <br \/>his father in 1932.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy own work as a clinical psychologist, coupled with volunteer engagement with community organizations, already had deepened my concerns for the most vulnerable among us,\u201d said Sara Moll, also a university trustee. \u201cThe stress and isolation that resulted from COVID-19 intensified existing struggles for many\u2014 and significantly increased the number of people needing assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Committed to addressing the crisis, Moll contacted interim provost <\/span><b>Joy K. Ward<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD, then the college\u2019s dean. After extensive discussions, the Molls pledged $23.5 million to launch the institute, with the university committing to cover the balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat the Molls imparted on me was this vision of the university being the leader, the driver of mental health breakthroughs in our community and understanding how we can best counsel those and support those in need,\u201d said Ward, who will continue to play a key role in the institute\u2019s development as the university\u2019s interim provost. \u201cThis generosity will enable us to make a real difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of the initiative, the university will establish additional faculty positions in psychological sciences and support increased enrollment in the clinical psychology PhD program. Currently, about six candidates are chosen annually from hundreds of applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s a glaring need for evidence- based psychotherapy treatments and training, and demand keeps growing,\u201d said<\/span><b> Robert Greene<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD, a professor and chair of the Department of Psychological Sciences. \u201cThe institute allows us to take a more comprehensive approach to address mental health in the immediate term and for years to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4070\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4070\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4070 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/artscimedia.case.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2024\/01\/02153702\/P13_DSC_1567_Credit_Juli_Regas.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of two students sitting next to each other on a set of stairs\" width=\"278\" height=\"393\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4070\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Psychology PhD students Hope Vaccaro and Jenna Bagley | Photo by Juli Regas<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Psychology faculty hope to build on existing research strengths, including suicide prevention, childhood anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatments, schizophrenia and other areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn the years ahead, our field will be focused on how psychotherapy and access to care can evolve and adapt in the modern era,\u201d Vaccaro said. \u201cWe need to find ways to get creative to meet growing needs, such as how technology in therapeutic spaces may help bridge the gap.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The investment in each clinical psychology PhD candidate is significant, as is the potential for each to contribute to the field\u2014in a variety of ways and environments\u2014over their careers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEach of us is equipped to be versatile\u2014from treating patients directly, to teaching, to building on the body of knowledge that helps optimize treatments and make them more effective,\u201d said <\/span><b>Jenna Bagley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (GRS \u201922, psychology), who earned a master\u2019s degree in psychology last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like Vaccaro, she works with patients in the psychology clinic, where supervised graduate students provide counseling services to community members and university students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Moll Institute and the psychology program will be housed in the former Nursing Research Building and occupy roughly 8,700 square feet of renovated space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHelping people make positive changes is the foundation of what we do,\u201d said Bagley, now a PhD student studying PTSD in sexual-assault survivors, who aims to conduct research in clinical settings. \u201cIt\u2019s always fulfilling to hear our patients say, \u2018I\u2019m feeling better. I can be me again.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><b>COVID-19\u2019s Damage to Mental Health<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the first two years of the pandemic, more than 40% of U.S. adults reported experiencing high levels of psychological distress, according to the Pew Research Center.
