{"id":4187,"date":"2023-12-31T19:32:50","date_gmt":"2024-01-01T00:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/magazine\/?p=4187"},"modified":"2024-01-16T21:43:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T02:43:34","slug":"a-model-scholar-and-human-being","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/magazine\/2023\/a-model-scholar-and-human-being\/","title":{"rendered":"A Model Scholar and Human Being"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_4188\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4188\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4188 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/artscimedia.case.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2024\/01\/02193548\/P38_Christine_Cano_No_Credit_IMG-0680-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Christine Cano outdoors and smiling at the camera.\" width=\"475\" height=\"417\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christine Cano<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last fall, <\/span><b>Jumoke Adebulu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> faced a quandary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Case Western Reserve senior needed to fulfill academic requirements for her French major and sports medicine minor before graduating\u2014 but the timing of twice-weekly courses from the two disciplines conflicted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Christine Cano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD, who taught the French course, devised a way for Adebulu to complete both classes. The extra effort exemplified the associate professor\u2019s commitment to students and her knack for making good things happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cano changed one weekly session to another time that worked for all the students, and once a week\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for the entire semester<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014Cano met with Adebulu in her office for an hour or more of individual class time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was very generous of her; I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d said Adebulu (CWR \u201923). \u201cI feel like it was definitely a highlight of my college years &#8230; It\u2019s something I will never forget.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last December, Cano died after a tragic fall at age 60. The university community continues to mourn the loss of the beloved colleague, friend and mentor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She was \u201ca model scholar, author, teacher and university citizen,\u201d said <\/span><b>Alan Rocke<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD, a historian and Distinguished University Professor Emeritus who was Cano\u2019s friend for more than two decades. \u201cI will always remember Christine\u2019s intellectual honesty, quiet dignity and graceful presence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cano was the kind of educator who could \u201cawaken a love of French culture and language in generations of students that inspired them far beyond graduation,\u201d said <\/span><b>Susanne Vees-Gulani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD, an associate professor of German and comparative literature and a longtime friend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cano was a highly regarded scholar of French literature and culture. Her first book,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Proust\u2019s Deadline<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2006), won widespread praise and continues to be cited today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cano also served at all levels of the university. \u201cShe probably knew more about the by-laws and all the university policies than anyone else and was always willing to share her knowledge and advice,\u201d said <\/span><b>Damaris Pu\u00f1ales- Alp\u00edzar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD, an associate professor of Hispanic studies and chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. \u201cWe have lost not only a great colleague, professor and scholar but also an extraordinary human being.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cano earned an undergraduate degree at Smith College and doctorate at Yale University, then taught at Bates College and Virginia Tech. She joined Case Western Reserve in 1999.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She was a kind soul, loyal friend and generous colleague who listened deeply; an academic who displayed curiosity, humor and intellectual courage; a teacher who always saw the full person before her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cano\u2019s offer last fall to hold individual sessions initially left Adebulu feeling nervous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI didn\u2019t think my French was good enough to converse with her alone,\u201d Adebulu recalled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But Cano was patient and, gradually, Adebulu could hold her own on topics ranging from recent weekend activities to literary works by French and Francophone women writers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think one of the things this really taught me was to be selfless,\u201d Adebulu said. \u201cRegardless of your position or ranking, to just go out of your way to do something beneficial for others.
