Ward. | Photo by Esterly Photography<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Case Western Reserve University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> announced a $60 million investment for the new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedaily.case.edu\/cwru-partners-with-sara-and-curt-moll-to-launch-60-million-institute-for-mental-health-and-well-being\/?_gl=1*6u9xv6*_gcl_au*MjAzMDkzOTczMy4xNzQxMTA0MjE5LjY5MDc5NDg2Mi4xNzQ2ODAwMDc3LjE3NDY4MDAwNzc.*_ga*MTU5MTg0NTQ0OS4xNzQxMTA0MjE5*_ga_LZP7PQBYX2*czE3NDg4NzA5OTgkbzE2NSRnMSR0MTc0ODg3NjUwNiRqMjckbDAkaDA.*_ga_RD325GFMCR*czE3NDg4NzA5OTgkbzE2NSRnMSR0MTc0ODg3NjUwNiRqMjckbDAkaDA.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sara and Curt Moll Institute for Mental Health and Well-Being<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, it marked a commitment to address and advance the growing mental health crisis within and beyond Northeast Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/psychsciences.case.edu\/faculty\/norah-feeny\/\"><b>Norah Feeny<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PhD, a distinguished psychologist and renowned researcher in the field of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and trauma, will lead the effort as the Moll Institute&#8217;s inaugural executive director.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In her new position, Feeny, a professor of psychological sciences in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.case.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">College of Arts and Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and director of the PTSD Treatment and Research Program, further elevates Case Western Reserve as an international leader in clinical psychology training and practice-based research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Moll Institute will provide critical research, training and resources to benefit the growing number of individuals living with mental illness as well as those who care for and support them,\u201d Case Western Reserve President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/president\/meet-president\"><b>Eric W. Kaler<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> said during the June 4 announcement to celebrate the start of construction work on a new space for the institute. \u201cWe are deeply grateful to Sara and Curt Moll for their commitment to improving lives and outcomes through better mental health care and we are so pleased that Norah Feeny will lead the institute\u2019s efforts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feeny\u2019s pioneering work has spanned more than three decades in diverse clinical settings, including sexual-assault programs, substance-abuse programs and outpatient clinics. Her research evaluates treatments, examines predictors of treatment success and optimizes therapies for the local community in need. She has also led treatment trials addressing pediatric PTSD, depression and bipolar disorder in youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNorah\u2019s exceptional career and dedication to advancing mental-health solutions make her the ideal leader for the Moll Institute,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/provost\/about\/bio\"><b>Joy K. Ward<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, provost and executive vice president. \u201cHer expertise and vision will be instrumental in positioning the institute as a global leader in addressing critical mental-health challenges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Growing mental-health crisis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Moll Institute, supported through a transformative commitment from Sara and Curt Moll, with the balance covered by the university, will address the escalating mental-health crisis through innovative research, education, clinical collaboration and community outreach. It will also double the number of clinical faculty in psychology and expand PhD training programs for clinical psychologists to meet the growing demand for mental-health expertise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The timing couldn\u2019t be more appropriate\u2014or needed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than one in five adults in the United States live with a mental illness, and only half receive treatment, according to the latest data from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Institute of Mental Health.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two in five high school students nationally reported experiencing symptoms of depression\u2014feeling so sad or hopeless daily for at least two straight weeks that they stopped doing some usual activities in the past 12 months, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (CDC).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Half of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24, according to the National Alliance of Mental Health, citing the CDC and several published scientific studies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese are our loved ones, friends, co-workers and neighbors, many of whom never get the treatment they require,\u201d Feeny said. \u201cThe Sara and Curt Moll Institute for Mental Health and Well-Being will begin to address this need in Northeast Ohio and beyond with the hiring of new clinical faculty, additional training opportunities\u00a0for our clinical PhD students and community bridges and connections.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About the Moll Institute<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Moll Institute opens this month in temporary space at 11635 Euclid Ave., which formerly housed the Cleveland Hearing &amp; Speech Center. The institute\u2019s permanent location in the Nursing Research Building, is scheduled to open in early summer 2027. That site was chosen for its location near key collaborators, including the university\u2019s School of Medicine and local hospital networks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The institute will focus on advancing and strengthening community support and promote innovative research to tackle these issues. By working with local health systems, the institute aims to improve mental health outcomes and promote well-being for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to addressing major mental health issues, programming will offer advice on such everyday challenges as raising teenagers, caring for loved ones with dementia and caring for young children.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis moment would not be possible without the extraordinary generosity and vision of Sara and Curt Moll,\u201d Ward said. \u201cTheir commitment to advancing mental healthcare and research speaks volumes\u2014not only about their values, but about their belief in what this university can do for the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sara Moll<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a triple-alumna and Case Western Reserve trustee, emphasized the urgency of the institute\u2019s mission. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur goal with the Moll Institute is to address the mental health crisis with innovation, compassion and collaboration,\u201d said Moll, PhD (FSM \u201966; GRS \u201990, \u201992, psychology). \u201cThis is deeply personal to me as a psychologist and as someone who has witnessed the growing need for mental health resources in our communities. With Dr. Feeny at the helm, I am confident that the institute will make a profound and lasting difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is an exciting day, and Sara and I are pleased to be involved,\u201d Curt Moll said. \u201cAs important as funding is for moving this institute forward, I believe Sara&#8217;s vision and passion for helping people will be a key driver of the Moll Institute&#8217;s success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Interdisciplinary approach<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feeny, who has a secondary appointment with the university\u2019s School of Medicine, will lead the institute in fostering interdisciplinary collaborations among faculty from psychiatry, neuroscience, medicine, nursing and other fields.
