About
The Department of Political Science extends a very warm welcome to Prof. Hanzhang Liu who will be teaching “The Politics of China” (POSC370D) this coming fall. We will be developing this page soon. For now, however, we wanted students to know a little bit about Liu’s expertise and background.
Prof Liu studies authoritarian politics and political economy of development, concentrating on China. She focuses on authoritarian institutions and their role in mediating the relationship between regime and citizenry. Her main research interests include 1) political selection and co-optation, 2) methods of information manipulation, and 3) gender in single-party political systems, all with an emphasis on implications for regime stability and security.
A 2019 Political Science PhD from Columbia University, Prof. Liu has published articles in the American Political Science Review, Political Science Research and Methods and Political Communication. She has also commented on Chinese politics in multiple media outlets including The New York Times, Bloomberg News, and South China Morning Post. She is currently writing a book, The Autocratic Logic of Meritocracy: Grassroots Political Co-optation in Contemporary China.
