Meet the Ceramics Club, A Group Centered on Self Expression and Creativity

Interested in making your own cutlery, animal figurines, a life-sized sitting rat, or a heart-shaped bowl? The Ceramics Club can make all your pottery dreams come true.

In 2021, the Ceramics Club was “re-fired” by Olivia Weng (pictured left – CWR ‘23) and Sai Mamidi (on the right – CWR ‘24) with the goal of bringing people together. After trying ceramics in high school, Weng was eager to bring the club back after the pandemic. But, she couldn’t do it alone. Turning to her fellow Pi Beta Phi sister, Weng showed Mamidi how much fun ceramics could be. Together, the two drafted a new constitution and the Ceramics Club was back.

When asked about the atmosphere of the club, current co-president Maddie Pfeifer used three words: energetic, uplifting and social. When students come to meetings feeling low, all their school-related stresses are quickly forgotten as the influx of conversations between new and old friends drowns out the music. Everyone is supportive of each other, regardless of experience.

“There is no judgment since no one can define or judge it by any means besides the artist,” said Pfeifer. “Through self expression and creativity, anyone can create art.”

And the members in the club mean it. Recently, the club partnered with Brew CWRU to make mugs for coffee. Additionally, the club partnered with the Pre Dental Society to form model teeth to practice on. There are no limits to what they can create.

Moving forward, the Ceramic Club hopes to provide wheel-throwing instructions for the general body members through Think[Box]. The ultimate goal is to have their very own kiln which would improve accessibility for everyone. With a mindset of keeping the club exciting, fun and their members satisfied, good things will continue to come out of the group.
