Faculty Spotlight: Nicholas Drashner

Nicholas Drashner, visiting associate professor in the Department of Theater, received both his master’s of fine arts in Sound Design for Theater and Dance, and his bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts from the University of California San Diego. After receiving his degrees, Drashner served as the assistant professor of sound design and projection design at Kent State University from 2015 to 2021. He also worked in the private sector as an audio experience engineer at BoomCloud360.

As a teenager, Drashner had a deep passion for making music and audio production. Now, his interest is in designing immersive experiences with a focus on spatial audio for live performance and fixed or interactive media. Being able to engage in research to develop new tools for creative expression in sonic arts is what Drashner loves most about his field. That and collaborating with other artists.

Now at Case Western Reserve, Drashner is enjoying working alongside the faculty in his department to help students make theater and express themselves creatively.

“Young professionals often have a very specific idea of their career path,” Drashner said. ”There is great value in being open to surprise twists and turns that may lead to unexpected opportunities. Anyone in their career, including students, should cast a wide net.”

Outside of sound design, Drashner’s interests lie in fitness, nutrition and financial health. He is also a big film and music nerd who enjoys a good americano.
