CWRUcio Quidditch, one of the 15 club sports at CWRU, plays the game of Quidditch, or quadball as it is often called. The sport is a combination of dodgeball, rugby and basketball that’s inspired by the Harry Potter franchise. In the books and movies, the characters fly around on brooms, trying to score through fifty foot hoops. One of the game’s largest features is the Snitch, a whizzing yellow ball that is near impossible to catch. In Quadball, this takes the form of a person that must be caught by a player of either team.
The club recently celebrated their tenth anniversary, so we asked CWRUcio’s president, Vivian Cox (pictured below right), to share more about the group.
What inspired the idea of the club?
The team was initially formed out of love for the Harry Potter franchise and a desire to express that love through physical activity. In the ten years since our inception, CWRUcio has grown into much more than that. We have increased in membership, joined the United States Quadball League (USQ), and have greatly expanded the social events we host. Even as we continue to grow, we still put that initial love of sports and all things nerdy into everything we do.
What is the goal of the club at CWRU?
Our mission is to provide a constructive and supportive environment for CWRU students to compete in the sport of Quidditch. We work to empower our members through participation in club activities, involvement in event planning and engagement in social recreation. We are always looking to set new competitive goals while maintaining our core objectives of fostering community and representing CWRU with honor.
How would you describe the atmosphere of the club?
Being on the Quidditch team is like being a puppy in a giant pile of puppies, if those puppies also sometimes put in mouthguards and tackle each other. In all seriousness, it is an atmosphere of genuine care and compassion, as well as one of constructive feedback and friendly competition. Everyone wants to get better at the sport and have fun together.
What are the hopes for the future of CWRUcio?
Our biggest hope for the future of the club is to spread our love of Quidditch and create a safe space for as many students as possible. Everyone deserves to have a space where they can talk to people with similar interests, feel supported on and off the field, and improve their own physical and mental health.
We also hope to continue improving the reputation of our team in the region, the skills of our members, and the quality of the social events we put on for the CWRU community. Our three new coaches, of which two are recent CWRU graduates, will allow us to increase our skill set as we start to compete as an official USQ team.
