Where could students from the college, Weatherhead School of Management or other school interested in economics gain sophisticated, hands-on research experience and connect with like-minded peers? The CWRU Journal of Economics was founded to address those very questions.
According to Laura Harris, economics and cognitive science major, and in charge of the club’s outreach, the Journal serves as an organization offering experiential learning and career development opportunities for economics students.
“This group is a platform for students to explore economic research, build data analysis skills and connect with peers interested in economics.”
Every Wednesday, the group meets in classroom 203 in the Peter B. Lewis Building from 6:30-7:30 p.m. In these meetings, members work on skill workshops and with speakers from various economic fields. The environment is extremely collaborative and supportive as various opportunities for mentorship and networking are made available to all members. More so, the club facilitates and encourages communication between students and professors. Members are able to work on independent research and academic papers, some of which are published in the Ohio region and beyond.
The Journal hopes to increase their readership through external submissions outside of CWRU. The Journal, founded in 2023 by recent graduates Brooke Hathhorn, Katie Meritt, Beck Pierce and Henry Blyth, advised by Sining Wang, Assistant Professor in the department of Economics. Since their founding, they have obtained an International Standard Serial Number and Digital Object Identifier, and have established a high school essay competition.
For all interested economists in the college or in the program, meetings are completely open to the public.
