Madeline Baker has certainly made her presence felt since joining the development team of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2020. A 2019 graduate of Ohio University, she started her CWRU career as a development assistant but each year has made an impact and is now the assistant director of donor engagement and alumni relations.
In her role, Madeline initiates and manages customized stewardship strategies for our donors, collaborates with recipients of scholarships and other awards to create impactful stories, and manages the college’s donor recognition societies. She also supports and assists in the planning for events such as homecoming and recognition programs that celebrate our alumni.
We asked Madeline a few questions so you can get to know her better.
Why did you choose CWRU?
I chose to work at CWRU because the environment encourages members to grow and learn professionally or personally. Each day I either learn something new or am inspired by others. I recently graduated from the Nonprofit Organizations program at Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and am grateful I was able to pursue my master’s while working. As a Lakewood native and since my grandfather graduated from Adelbert College, I was familiar with CWRU, but I am happy I have made my own connection.
What did you do prior to joining CWRU?
I joined CWRU in 2020, shortly after graduating from college in 2019, but in the months between I worked at Cuyahoga County as a public policy fellow.
What do you like most about your role?
I love hearing about the research and activities students participate in on and off campus, especially when they can combine their passions or hobbies and education. I then get to share their stories with donors and alumni to inspire future support for our amazing students and faculty.
Another aspect I enjoy is working with department chairs and staff to track down information on endowments so the funds can be used properly and stewarded– sometimes it can be a little history project. If you ever have questions about endowments or donor funds, please reach out! 🙂
What do you look forward to in your professional career?
I hope to always work in a role where I can cultivate and strengthen relationships with individuals and organizations who are passionate about making a difference in their communities through advocacy or philanthropy and sharing their impact.
Do you have any personal goals, hobbies, family, interests that you would like to share?
I have a lot of little hobbies like reading, crafting and baking, but I mostly enjoy getting out and about in Cleveland. Whether that is paddleboarding on Lake Erie, trying new restaurants, going to Guardians, Cavs or Browns games and skiing in the short window we get in Ohio.
