Majors: Sociology, Social Work
Minors: Psychology, Geriatric Studies
Q: Why did you choose this area of study?
A: I have always aspired to be a social worker since the eight grade. I am interested in society and individuals- how individuals interact with each other, as well as how they interact with society. Most importantly, how the two influence each other, positively and negatively. As I became more aware of the world around me, I grew disheartened by the societal barriers, inequality, and inequity, certain individuals have to face based on social characteristics (e.g. socioeconomic status, place, race etc.). I wanted to do something about it, initially coming in with the goal of being a voice for others and advocating for change on their behalf to create social change within society and institutions and ensure that they have the resources they need to live a meaningful life. However, now I realize that it is not about being a voice for others, it is allowing the space for individuals to utilize their voices’ and aiding/ empowering them in making sure that their voices are heard and acted upon to promote social change because they themselves know best what they want and need. I am more specifically interested in older adults as they are often overlooked and mistreated in society.
Q: What are you plans after graduation?
A: As I am a graduating senior this Spring, my academic journey will not stop there. I am not your traditional undergraduate student. I am a dual enrollment student, both an undergraduate and graduate student. This was made possible under the Senior Year of Professional Studies program offered by CWRU, allowing me to substitute my traditional senior year of undergrad for the first year of graduate school. I am currently enrolled in the social work program at CWRU’S Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences (MSASS). In the Fall, I will be entering my second and final year of the social work program, on track to graduate with my MSW and achieving my goal of becoming a geriatric social worker!
Q: Why did you choose CWRU?
A: I chose CWRU for a few reasons. I am a Cleveland native and wanted to stay in my hometown, their programs (Provost Scholars, Emerging Scholars, Collegiate Connections, Spartan Ambassadors, etc.), academics, and plethora of opportunities that come with being a student.
Q: What is your favorite memory of CWRU?
A: My favorite memory at CWRU is spending time during class breaks in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). I loved spending time with friends and engaging with the staff there!
Q: What is the one thing you’d like to share with incoming freshman?
A: Do not forget to breathe, relax, good things take time. Also, remember to be grateful and practice gratitude!
