CWRU Physics Showcase: Data Science in Art, Discerning the Painters’ Hand
Thursday, January 20, 2022 | 7:00 PM
Machine learning has been applied to high-resolution optical topography images of painted artworks aiming to discern intentional and unintentional painting styles peculiar to individual painters and to attribute paintings among several painters. Outstanding results with 95% accuracy were obtained in a controlled experiment with Cleveland Institute of Art student artists. Spatial mode analysis and other length scale studies revealed that the shortest length scales were most revelatory, with significant accuracy down to length scales as small as the diameter of a single bristle. These methods are being applied, in collaboration with Factum Arte, to the latter works of El Greco with the aim of attributing portions of paintings to El Greco and various members of his workshop.
