Graduation Spotlight: Brandon Ferraro

Majors: Mechanical Engineering, Physics

Minor: Mathematics

Why did you choose these areas of study?

I like the intersection of computational techniques applied to engineering applications. Within fluid/thermal science research, I was able to design my curriculum to highlight this coursework that spanned theoretical proofs through real-world projects.

Because I didn’t have much background in what I wanted to do as a career, this holistic study of physical mechanics enabled me to learn what I enjoyed and what my possibilities were after graduation.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to attend Stanford University for my MS in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on computational fluid dynamics and microfluidics.

Why did you choose CWRU?

I choose CWRU because of the focus on research in STEM and the availability of flexible coursework. I did not know what engineers do at all so I wanted the ability to change, add to and configure my course schedule. CWRU was the best place for me to determine what I enjoyed studying.

What’s your favorite memory of CWRU?

One of my favorite memories was putting on the first Halloween drag show at CWRU in the fall 2021 semester as part of oSTEM. I have been with the oSTEM@CWRU chapter since when I helped found the club during my freshman year. Seeing more than 700 students show up for an event celebrating LGBTQ+ art was an exciting and heartwarming experience to be a part of alongside the rest of the executive board.

My other favorite memory was performing with CWRU Jump Rope at Springfest in spring 2022. I started this club freshman year with the goal of sharing the sport I love with the community and it was so fun to perform in front of the student body.

As a graduating senior, what’s one thing you’d like to share with incoming students?

Don’t be afraid to create your own experience at Case Western Reserve. The university has so many resources and opportunities for students to create their own clubs, coursework, research projects, events, etc., that is not nearly as accessible at other schools. Explore, find your passions, and chase your goals because the CWRU community will support you.
