Mission Statement

The College of Arts and Sciences Web Content Management System (CAS CMS) exists to serve departments, centers, faculty, staff, and students with a resource to create attractive, easy to manage, unified, public-facing websites. The CAS CMS team will create, maintain, and update the system on behalf of the users and editors. The CAS CMS is a College of Arts and Sciences community-driven resource that relies on its editors to maintain the content in the system. Decisions regarding the CAS CMS are made to the benefit of the community.

Data Retention

The CAS CMS utilizes a content delivery network to serve static files such as images and documents. These files are retained for a maximum of two weeks beyond deletion in the CMS. If you delete a media file, that file may still be available for up to two weeks post-deletion via other avenues such as Google. If you need a file deleted immediately and cannot wait for the expiration please email casweb@case.edu.

Access

  1. New editor access to departmental websites must be approved by the department chair or organization’s primary leader.
  2. Only the department chair or organization’s primary leader, and a department assistant or administrator, are allowed access to edit personnel directory listings. Student editors and faculty are not allowed access to the directory area.
  3. Every person who accesses the CMS administration area must complete the level of training appropriate to their need prior to being granted access. Training modules and access are assigned based on the type of site being accessed. To request access please email casweb@case.edu.

Requesting Plugins

Plugins may only be installed on the central system by one of the super-administrators. Plugin installation is generally discouraged, but consideration is given to every request. Decisions are made based on the following criteria, in no particular order:

  1. Security and Privacy. Does the plugin have the potential to expose our website to vulnerabilities? Does it need or share private information?
  2. Server and System Impact. What kind of resources does the plugin require to run? Is it processor intensive? Does it load on every page of the site or just certain areas?
  3. Multisite Compatibility. Does the plugin work well in our unique environment? Some plugins are basically unusable in a multisite environment.
  4. Bloat. Is the plugin storing many large files? Is the plugin itself large? Does it add a lot of needless information to the database?
  5. Usefulness for Others. Do other sites on our system have a need for the plugin?
  6. Reputation. If we use the plugin will we be on the forefront of a new development or technology?
  7. Support. Is the plugin well documented? Is it updated frequently? Is there an active support community?

Based on these criteria a decision will be made within a reasonable time frame and communicated to the requestor. If you’d like to request a plugin please email casweb@case.edu.

Requesting New Plugin Development

Plugins may be developed by the CAS CMS team if they meet the following requirements. Decisions are made based on these criteria on an individual basis.

  1. Does the proposed plugin already exist, developed by another group? If so, please see the Requesting Plugins section above. Can the proposed goal be achieved by using another service, such as a cloud service?
  2. Server and System Impact. What kind of resources does the plugin require to run? Is it processor intensive? Would it load on every page of the site or just certain areas?
  3. Internal or External Use. Is the website’s target audience internal or external?
  4. Usefulness for Others. Do other sites on our system have a need for the plugin?
  5. Reputation. If we author the plugin will we be on the forefront of a new development or technology? Can the plugin be shared publicly?
  6. Support. How much active support or training will be required for users to utilize the plugin?

Faculty Websites

For faculty that would like to frequently edit their CWRU faculty profile or would like a more robust area to display their work and achievements we provide full-fledged faculty websites. Faculty who would like their own faculty website should contact casweb@case.edu. Please note: You will be required to complete online training before your website will be made public and before you will be allowed editor access.
