This guide will outline, step by step, how to upload videos to Youtube, as well as utilize the User Privacy settings for various purposes.  Before you begin, make sure you have your video file created and on your computer in some form, whether on a flash drive or on the hard drive.

Step 1. Navigate to Youtube and click the “Sign In” button on the top right, which will take you to the Google sign on page.  Input your Case email and click “Next” where you’ll be taken to Single Sign-On.  Sign in using your Case ID and password.

Step 1

Step 2. Once you’re logged in, click on the gray “Upload” button on the top right.

Step 2

Step 3. Click and drag your video file from its location into the middle of the screen, near where it says “drag and drop video files”.

Step 3

Step 4. While the video uploads and processes, you’ll be able to fill out its basic information, such as Title, description and tags (which make the video more searchable – if it’s only for private use or to be embedded somewhere, you don’t have to bother with tags).

Step 4

Step 5.   Under “Video Thumbnails”, select the image to be used as the icon of the video before it plays.

Step 5

Step 6. If you have several related videos, you can create a playlist to group them together.

Step 6

Step 7.Set the privacy settings of the video:

  • Public if you want the video to be accessible by anyone, and able to be found by others searching Youtube
  • Unlisted if you want anyone to be able to access the video, but only through the direct link – it will not appear on Youtube or Google search results

  • Private if you want the video to be restricted to you and other Google accounts you choose to share it with.  You add users by clicking on the gray “Share” button right under the dropdown box.  (Remember that many people have multiple Youtube accounts, making private sharing difficult sometimes – this is only recommended if the information contained in the video is confidential)

Step 7

Step 8. Click the blue “Done” button on the top right to save your changes

Step 8

Step 9. The URL for your video will be on the left hand side, under the thumbnail.  Click on the link to go to the video.

Step 9

Step 10.  You can click on the pencil icon on the left right below your video to bring up the Info & Settings window, and click on the “Advanced Options” tab.  Among other things, here you can:

    • Enable or disable comments
    • Enable or disable viewer ratings

When you’ve made any changes to the settings be sure to click the “Save” button at the bottom right.

Step 10

Step 11. To embed the video in Blackboard (or another site), copy the video URL – you can do this from the Info & Settings screen, or directly from the top of your browser when you’re on the video page.

Step 11

Step 12. In your Blackboard course, click on the “Assignments” link on the left side of the screen, scroll over to the “Build Content” drop-down menu, and click “Item” under the “Create” category.

Step 12

Step 13. Click the “Insert/Edit Embedded Media” button in the editor.

Step 13

Step 14. In the new window, change the “Type” list box to “iframe”, and paste the video URL you copied earlier.  Click the “Insert” button at the bottom right.  (If you’d like to embed multiple videos in one post, go into the text editor where your first video is embedded, hit enter a few times, and do steps 13 and 14 again).

Step 14

Step 15. Click the “Submit” button on the top right to save your item.  Your students enrolled in the course on Blackboard can now access it.  Alternately, if you wanted to share the video you could simply send your students the link if your video is set to Public or Unlisted.
